Our History

The Kummissjoni Persuni Ħandikappati was launched in 1987; in 1993, its name was changed to Kummissjoni Nazzjonali Persuni b’Diżabilità (KNPD). In 2000, the Equal Opportunities Act (EOA) was passed and in 2012 Malta ratified the UNCRPD. In 2016, the legislation was amended and the name was changed to Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD); other changes including the addition of a Bill of Rights to the EOA; the addition of an article about Health and Wellbeing and the creation of the Commissioner’s role.
